The history of Pondicherry dates back to the Pallava dynasty in 325 CE. It was then ruled by the Chola Dynasty from 900 to 1279 CE and the Pandya Dynasty from 1279-1370.  During the Fourteenth Century, the area was under the Vijayanagara Empire till 1614 before it was conquered by the Sultan of Bijapur who ruled from 1614 to 1638.  It became a trading center during this period with Danish, Dutch and Portuguese merchants visiting frequently.  The prospering trade attracted the French who set up a French settlement in Pondicherry in 1674. In 1693, the Dutch captured Pondicherry but returned it in 1699 to the French following a treaty.  The British and French fought a war over Pondicherry from 1763 to 1814.  The French then continued to control Pondicherry until 1954.
